Borneo Malaysia
Borneo is the third biggest Island in the world, and also one of the oldest Island of the world.
Borneo Is divided between 3 countries: Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.
When we thought about Borneo we didn’t knew which part of Borneo to visit. We started to do our research in blogs about the most touristic places, because you know, where is more touristic is cheaper. Because you have more options, you can move around more safely and easier.
I didn’t knew anything about this place in specific, the only thing I was sure is that I wanted to be apart of civilization and crowds of tourists. I wanted to be in nature, in the forest. Just listening the sounds of the birds, you know, just enjoying nature.
My sister is Biologist, so as you can imagine we wanted a trip full of nature, but respecting nature, as much as we could, we wanted to see animales in their habitat.
Borneo Malasia
Borneo es la tercera Isla mas grande del mundo, es una de las selva tropicales mas antigua del mundo . Borneo es territorio dividido entre 3 países: Malasia, Indonesia y Brunei.
La verdad es que no sabíamos a que parte de Borneo ir, nos pusimos a leer lo mas que pudimos sobre qué lugar era mas accesible como turista, porque los lugares mas turísticos son los lugares donde es mas fácil moverte y muchas veces mas económico.
Yo no sabía de este lugar, recuerdo que quería ir a un lugar alejado de turistas, y civilización, quería estar entre selva y animales, escuchar solo el sonido de los pájaros y de la naturaleza en sí.
Mi hermana es Bióloga y gran parte de nuestro viaje debía estar lleno de naturaleza y paisajes de esos que te dejan sin aliento y si se podía animales, pero queríamos ver animales en su habitat natural.
When my sister mentioned Borneo I didn’t knew much what she was talking about , I just knew that it was a Rain Forest.
Borneo is not a very touristic destination , I realized that, when I started to search info in Pinterest and stuff, is not like Thailand that you find info everywhere.
We wanted to see Orangutans for sure, that was the main goal of Borneo, and Pigmy Elephants, they are a subspecies of Asian elephants. They are smaller then the regular Asian Elephants but with bigger ears and tails.
Between all our research we found Kinabatangan River, it looked like the cheapest option, and nice place too.
So we decided to get there, what an amazing experience, I swear it was such a peaceful days, a nature encounter. Were our only worry was to find wild animals
Mi hermana mencionó Borneo, y yo no tenía mucha idea mas que era una selva.
Borneo no es un lugar tan turístico. Al menos eso me di cuenta cuando empezamos a buscar información en Blogs ya que no encontrábamos mucha información como es de fácil encontrar información de playas bonitas en Tailandia.
Queríamos ver Orangutanes, ese era el objetivo principal de Borneo y elefantes pigmeos que es una subespecie de Elefantes Asiáticos, mas chiquitos que los elefantes de tamaño normal, con oreja y cola mas grandes.
Entre todos los Blogs que leímos encontramos el río de Kinabatangan.
Y ahí decidimos llegar.
Qué experiencia tan diferente, se los juro que fueron unos días de tanta relajación, paz, y encuentro con la naturaleza.
Donde la única preocupación era encontrar animales.

How to get to Kinabantang River?
We took a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Sandakan city ( Malaysia).
From there we went to this hostel in the city, and there they gave us some info about the different tours.
The company pick up us from our hostel and from there they take you to the river, which from the city to the river it is 2 hours driving.
And then from the river arrival, you get a boat to your hostel.
Timing
They have so many different packages: from 1 day to 5 I think so, we took the 3 nights 4 days.
There is not a minimum or maximum ideal to stay you know?, It really depends on you of how many days you want to stay there. Because basically you do the same daily thing : take the boat and go by the river to look for animals, and at night do some walks to look for more animals.

Cómo llegar al río de Kinabtangan?
Nosotros tomamos un vuelo de Kuala Lumpur a Sandakan. Al llegar a la ciudad nos albergamos en un hostal en el centro de la ciudad, al que pedimos informes sobre tours y ahí nos dijeron del tour que tomamos.
La compañía te recoge del hostal y te llevan al río que de Sandakan al río se hace 2 horas en autobús aproximadamente.
Y del rio te llevan en lancha al lugar donde dormirás.
Tiempos
Hay distintos paquetes donde te ofrecen desde quedarte solo un día hasta quedarte por 7 días. Yo hice el paquete de 4 días 3 noches .
Realmente no existe un mínimo o máximo ya depende de ti cuanto tiempo quieras quedarte en este paraíso porque básicamente todos los días se hace lo mismo: recorrer el Rio por la mañana en busca de animales y por la noche caminatas en busca de mas animales.
What kind of animals can you spot?
Personally I wanted to see first of all the Pigmy Elephants because Elephants are one of my favorite animals eveeer, then Orangutans and the Proboscis monkeys.
And of course birds and stuff, but principal those.
How many chances are to spot some of these animals?
Elephants is possible but not common at all. The group who arrived one day earlier then us saw them! Crossing the river, beside their boat, my eyes saw the video, and just the video was Wonderfull, now imagine to see them with your own eyes.
We couldn’t saw them though, but there are possibilities for sure.
Orangutans and Proboscis monkeys is very likely maybe 100%.
Besides those animals, we saw other kind of monkeys, multicolor Birds, spiders and I think thats about.
In this Islands there are a very few Rhinos, but is almost impossible to see them, because they are in extinction.
Qué animales se pueden ver?
Personalmente había 3 animales que yo moría por ver. Primeramente los Elefantes Pigmeos ( porque simplemente los elefantes son de mis animales favoritos), los Orangutanes, y los Monos Narigudos ( únicos de la Isla de Borneo).
Claro también quería ver pájaros y demás. Pero principalmente estos tres.
Què probabilidad hay de que los veas?
Los elefantes se pueden llegar a ver, un grupo con el que conversamos fueron dichosos de ser testigos de un grupo de elefantes nadando a su lado por el río, el video yo lo vi y fue maravilloso.
A mi lamentablemente no me tocó verlos, pero de que es probable, es probable.
Los Orangutanes y Monos Narigudos es casi un 100 % que los veas. Aparte de esos animales vimos otra clase de changos, pájaros multicolores, arañas y creo que nada más.
En esta Isla hay rinocerontes! Pero esos son muy extraños que los puedas ver. Ya que es una especie en peligro de extinción.

What to take?
It is very important to take insect repellent for the mosquitos, long pants and fresh long sleeve shirts for the walks.
Don´t worry about boots, because they borrow you some rain boots, and of course take your Rain coat, I think they can borrow you one too.
Obviously your camera, and remember the less you take the better.
They will provide you with delicious food 😉 and lovely local company.
I would like to make clear that the orangutans and Proboscis monkeys are at the top of the tall trees, so you can´t see them that close, if you wish to see them closer there are 2 places to visit:
Que llevar?
Es importante llevar repelente porque al ser una selva tropical hay muchos mosquitos, llevar pantalones largos y blusas de manga larga pero de tela fresca por las caminatas y la precaución de piquetes de mosquito y demás.
No te preocupes por botas porque ahí te prestan botas para las caminatas.
Un impermeable porque al ser selva llueve muy seguido. Aunque me parece que ahí también te facilitan impermeables.
Obviamente cámara fotografica, y recuerden mientras menos lleves es mejor ;).
Ahi te proporcionan todos los alimentos (deliciosos). Los guías son nativos super amables.
Cabe destacar que los monos y orangutanes los ves de lejos obviamente porque tu estas en el bote, hay una opción para verlos un poco mas de cerca y esto es en :
Sepilok Orangutan Centre.
This is an rehabilitation center, they take Orangutans that were found in Palm Oil plantations, or where they were treated as pets, or were victims of ilegal hunting.
They get rehab here and whenever they are ready, they go back to the jungle.
This is a huge place, there is an observatory with big cristal walls were you can see how they feed them, and play with them.
You can be able to get encounters with them, sometimes you found them jumping between trees, when the caters are feeding them.
This place is very close from Sandakan and Kinabatangan River. When our tour in the river finished, they took us to the Orangutan centre and from there you can take a public transport that takes you back to Sandakan.

Sepilok Orangutan Centre.
Este es un centro de Rehabilitaciòn de Orangutanes que han sufrido por ser mascotas ilegales, víctimas de caza ilegal, encontrados en plantaciones de aceite de Palma etc.
Son rehabilitados aquí y en cuanto están listos para regresar a su habitat natural los liberan.
Este lugar es muy amplio y hay un observatorio donde puedes apreciar cuando alimentan a los Orangutanes chiquitos, y en las caminatas del lugar a veces hay Orangutanes que se pueden llegar a acercar a ti cuando están siendo alimentados por los voluntarios.
Este lugar se encuentra cerca de Sandakan, por ejemplo cuando terminò nuestro tour en el Río Kinabantangan, les pedimos que nos dejaran en Sepilok Center. Ahí vimos a los Orangutanes y de ahí hay transporte publico que puede llevarte a la ciudad de Sandakan sin problema.

The Sanctuary of Proboscis monkeys in Labuk Bay.
Very close from Sepilok there is a place were you can spot from super close the Proboscis monkeys, seeing them jumping, swinging, eating. They are less shy from the Orangutans, literary they jump between you.
It’s important that you are respectful with their space, and understood that they are wild animals and could react very territorial from the nothing, so be very careful.
You can also see the Silver Langur monkeys and this beautiful birds the Rhinoceros Hornbill.
They know that they can get feed so they fly to this place and you can take some beautiful pictures.
Santuario de Monos Narigudos Labuk Bay
Cerca de Sepilok se encuentra este Santuario donde puedes observar de cerca estos monos tan simpáticos, verlos balancearse y comer. Ellos son un poco menos tímidos que los Orangutanes. Corren y pasan entre ti.
Es importante que respetes su espacio y entiendas que son animales salvajes y de un momento a otro pueden reaccionar territorialmente así que se cuidadoso.
En ese lugar podrán observar un ave hermosa nativa de la region el Cálao Cariblanco donde llega en ocasiones a comer. También están los monos Langur plateado.
Puu Jih Shih Temple
This temple is very close from the city and you can get there by public transport ; ) wich is a very nice adventure.
The view of the city from here is awesome.
Also don’t miss to go to the local food market to see all the crazy- different fruits and vegetable.
And don’t miss the delicious local Malaysian food.

En la ciudad de Sandakan visitamos un templo lindo que les dejo las fotitos por si se les antoja ir, literal tomas un autobús en el centro de la ciudad que te deja cerquita del templo, el plus de este templo es que tiene una vista muy linda.
Ya en la ciudad también les recomiendo ir a darse una vuelta por el mercado para que descubran frutas y verduras muy locas, así como probar la comida de originaria de Malasia es deliciosa.
The Truth of Borneo
I would like to share my experience here, literally it changed my life.
Since we got off the plain, it catch my attention how green it everything looks, I just saw many trees, and I thought how cool!.
When we got to the river you could simple see how devastated the forest was, with gaps of trees everywhere. Deforestation was evident.
We had a conversation with the locals and they said they were fighting against the hunters, that obviously were ilegal and very dangerous.
All this deforestation of forest happens to be able to plant this Palms that will give the oil that practically is used for everything in our daily lifes.
Later on I had the chance to chat with this girl who had this small food street business and she told me she had found Elephants that were destroying fences because they were lost and desperate without home.
Be able to see this reality with your own eyes, sensitizes you, and make you open your eyes about things that we always had ignored. Sometimes we got to see things by ourselves to really open our eyes to the reality.
I won’t get deep in this subject in this post because is not the main purpose but I will leave this links if you are interested to know a little bit more of this subject.

This place is totally Wonderfull, I wish I had more time in to the Forest, see more Wildlife and get involved in this situation. La Realidad de Borneo
Me gustaría contarles que el venir a este lugar cambió tanto mi vida.
Recuerdo que desde que tomamos el taxi del Aeropuerto al hostal vi muchas plantaciones de palma, se veía todo verde y me pareció lindo.
Después llegamos al río y mientras buscábamos elefantes era obvio ver que la selva se veía “ pelona” faltaban arboles, era clara la deforestación.
Platicamos con el chico local y nos platicó un poquito de como ellos mismos luchan contra los cazadores de animales , obviamente todo es ilegal y muy peligroso.
Y toda la deforestación de selvas que hay para sembrar las palmas que nos dará el aceite de Palma que se usa para casi absolutamente todo lo que usamos y consumimos en la vida diaria.
En Sepilok nos mostraron un video tan pero tan triste, donde se ven los Monos cayendo de los arboles mientras su habitat es destrozado por nosotros los humanos, para usarlo para las plantaciones de Palma.
Después platique con una chica que tenia un puestito de comida y me platicaba que a veces llegaban elefantes a su casa y rompían las cercas porque obviamente al ser destrozados sus habitats naturales ellos se encuentran perdidos.
El ver con tus propios ojos esta realidad te sensibiliza y te hace darte cuenta de cosas que muchas veces ignoramos. A veces necesitamos ver con nuestros propios ojos para darnos cuenta de la realidad.
No ahondaré en este tema en este post porque no es la intención primaria, pero en el próximo post me gustaría platicar mas sobre el tema.

Este lugar es maravilloso, me hubiera encantado adentrarme un poco mas en la vida salvaje de esta maravillosa Isla, y poder involucrarme un poco más.
